CFD responds to fires in Milton & Randolph

By

Canton fire crews assisted with two major fires in the neighboring towns of Milton and Randolph on back-to-back days during the weekend of April 27-28.

The second fire, which broke out Sunday evening on Bridle Path Circle in Randolph, destroyed an entire three-story apartment building, displacing approximately 80 residents.

Four firefighters from the Ponkapoag station, along with Canton Deputy Chief Ed Freitas, responded to the scene, where they assisted with extinguishment operations and served as a rapid intervention team. During the operation, firefighters had to be pulled from the building due to concerns about its structural integrity.

Firefighters from several other communities also responded to the blaze, and crews were on scene for approximately six hours.

The Randolph Fire and Police departments and the state fire marshal’s office are investigating the fire, but Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said determining a cause will be difficult since the building had to be torn down.

Damages are estimated in the millions of dollars, and the residents of the building, who lost all of their belongings, are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

One day earlier, a crew of six Canton firefighters spent several hours battling a large brush fire in the Blue Hills Reservation on Hillside Street, opposite the Milton State Police barracks. CFD firefighters ran a supply line to the Milton firefighters who were operating in the area of Tucker Hill and Dark Hollow Path.

Off-duty firefighters were called in to provide station coverage during both fires.

DPW outlines roadwork plans

Weather permitting, downtown paving will continue on Sunday and Monday, May 12 and 13, according to DPW Operations Manager Bill Walsh.

Also on the to-do list is paving on Dedham Street; surface sealing on Spruce/Laurel lanes and Waterman/ Thoreau/Aldrich/Emerson roads; and crack sealing on Beatty/Legion, Brooksweld/Greenbriar/Pinedale/Shepard, Kenney/Colonial/Mount Vernon, Ponkapoag/Cedar/Flagstaff Hill, Heritage/Hearthridge/Homestead, Shawnlee/Woodlock, Westdale/Varney, Pequit Street, Sassamon Street and Washington Street.
