CHS football players participate in Hock showcase

By

The Hockomock League recently held its first ever football showcase, giving rising juniors and seniors the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of college scouts from area schools in divisions 1-3.

The event was held at Milford High School with 93 Hockomock League athletes participating, including seven from Canton High School: Luke Laguerre (OL), Effrem Gnepo (DL), Tyler Kelly (WR), Nick Crowe (RB), Kareem Chaplin (RB) and Rhancy Jean Baptiste (DL) and Jake Marcell, an incoming transfer from Catholic Memorial. Laguerre, Chaplin and Crowe have been elected captains for the upcoming season.

CHS head football coach Anthony Fallon said coaches and representatives from the University of Rhode Island, UMass, UMaine, UNH, Boston College, Brown University, Bridgewater State University, Curry College, Plymouth State and Fordham were on hand for the showcase.

Athletes participated in speed and agility tests and took part in one-on-one and 7-v-7 competitions.

To be eligible, students must be rising juniors and seniors who are on a varsity football roster for next season and have expressed an interest in playing college football.

Fallon said the MIAA recently gave permission to the Hockomock League to stage the event after other independent leagues held similar events.

Fallon said the showcase was a success and Canton athletes competed well, drawing interest from scouts. He also had the opportunity to talk to some of the scouts about Canton’s football players.
