Taylor, Donald L.

Donald Lee Taylor, of Canton, died peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on June 11, 2024. He was 90 years young.

He was born in Harrisburg, Illinois, joined the U.S. Navy after graduation, and was a veteran of the Korean War. Don went on to have a distinguished career at General Motors that spanned more than 30 years, followed by a second career with Manheim Auto Auction, which came to a close in 2019. He was a proud employee of Chevrolet and the car industry at large. He was forever grateful to GM for transferring him to Boston because it allowed him to meet his late wife, Claire, over 50 years ago.

Don enjoyed golf, sailing, westerns (especially Gunsmoke), traveling, and spending time on Cape Cod with his family every summer. He was a proud lifetime member of Savin Hill Yacht Club. Don was known to everyone he met as a friend. He loved using his connections to help family and friends (really anyone who asked him) purchase their cars. His sense of humor was always present, making everyone around him laugh and feel comfortable. He spent his last five years amongst the caring friends he made at Brightview Senior Living. If you asked him, he’d say his biggest accomplishment was his family and being “Papa” to his six grandchildren. He always put family above everything else.

Don was the devoted husband of the late Claire Polek Taylor, to whom he was married for 42 happy years. He was the loving father of Matthew and Paula Taylor of Wrentham, Martha and David Murray of Plainville, and Robert and Melyssa Taylor of Needham. Brother of the late Frank Taylor and Jerry Taylor. Brother-in-law of Richard Polek and Barbara Polek. Proud grandfather of Ryan Taylor, Alice Taylor, Matthew Murray, Callie Murray, Abigail Taylor, and Claire Taylor. Uncle of Mark Taylor, Leslie Marcum, Letitia Rhodes, Emily Dunn, and several great nieces and nephews.

A memorial Mass was held Tuesday in St. Oscar Romero Catholic Church in Canton. Interment private. Donations may be made in Donald’s memory to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Hematologic (Blood) Cancers at dana-farber.org/gift.
