Jr. Legion team climbs to third place after 3-0 stretch
By Mike BergerStrong pitching performances by a trio of promising CHS ballplayers helped lift the Canton Post 24 Junior Legion baseball team over .500 with recent wins over Sharon, Quincy and North Attleboro. Now at 8-6 overall, Canton currently sits at third place in the District 6 standings and is firmly in position to secure a postseason spot.
In all three wins last week, starting pitching was instrumental for Canton. In their most recent victory — 6-5 over Sharon on Friday — Canton trailed by three entering the seventh inning but struck for four runs of their own to retake the lead. Will Young, who drew the start on the mound for Post 24, also came through at the plate, sparking the rally with a two-run hit. Justin Lesser then came on to close out the game and record the save.
Two nights before on Wednesday, July 10, Shane Kelleher limited Quincy to two hits while striking out seven in a complete-game shutout victory. TJ Gannon had the big hit in the game for Canton with a bases-clearing, three-run double in the second inning. Shortstop JT Norton made several big plays in the field and catcher Liam Connolly threw out a would-be base stealer.
The Legion team began the week with a 5-1 win over North Attleboro as Teddy Shuman struck out eight batters over six innings. Andrew Gilis came on in relief to finish the game. Offensively, Shuman and Norton each had two hits while Chris Pirrera, Gillis, Kelleher, and Antonio Kaplan drove in runs.
This week’s schedule calls for Canton to again face North Attleboro on July 17 and then travel to Braintree on Friday, July 19. The Junior Legion playoffs are set to begin on Friday. July 26.
