John Joseph Mooney, 93, of Canton passed away peacefully at his home in Canton on August 2, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Virginia (Sullivan). Also survived by his seven children, John Daniel Mooney and his late husband, Rick Blakeley, of Harwich Port, Michael of Revere, Richard and his partner, Nelson Castellanos, of Mahwah, NJ, Paul and his wife, Lori, of Canton, Mark and his wife, Judy, of Mattapoisett, James and his wife, Kim, of Canton, and Joan Pagel of Canton. He was the loving grandfather to Aaron, Bradford, Robert, Brendon, Zachary, Carolyn, Lauren, Kelly, Mikayla, Zechariah, Morgan, John, Nicole and Amanda. Great-grandfather to Melody, Aria, Ciranda, Jonathan, Logan, Calvin, and Charlotte. John was also preceded in death by his first wife, Winifred (Freddie), who was the mother of his seven children (d. 1976).

He attended Northeastern University, Boston College Law School, and Loyola University College of Law JD. He held many political positions throughout his life. In Canton, he was a state representative from 1970-1972 where he served on the Judiciary Committee as well as on the Special Commission for Judicial Reform. He also served as a member of the Massachusetts Bar Blue Ribbon Committee. Within Canton, he served on the Personnel Board, Zoning Board of Appeals, Canton Conservation Commission and Canton Democratic Town Committee.

Professionally, Mr. Mooney was employed by Kemper Insurance for 41 years where he started working in the mailroom and rose to become the division claims manager. After Kemper Insurance left the state of Massachusetts, he became the first president and COO of Arbella Mutual Insurance Company from 1988-1994. He also was a representative to the Commonwealth Reinsurers Claims Advisory Committee. He was instrumental in the creation of the Insurance Fraud Bureau of Massachusetts and served on the bureau’s Board of Governors. He was an attorney of law in both Illinois and Massachusetts. He was also a former member of the Board of Trustees for Quincy College; former president and director of Canton Cable Access Corporation; incorporator of Algonquin Credit Union; director of GS Industries and president of JJM Enterprises. He was a member of the Massachusetts and Norfolk County bar associations, National Legislators Association, Toastmaster International, Knights of Columbus, Blue Hills Civic Association, Massachusetts Guarantee Fund, and Massachusetts Legislators Association.

John loved helping others with legal issues and doing research on land ownership in Canton. He had a strong faith in Jesus Christ and was an active member within the Catholic Church. For the past 20 years he split his time enjoying his homes in Canton and Venice, Florida, where he and his wife, Virginia, played golf and enjoyed their retirement. John was a proud member of both Wampatuck and Venice Golf and Country Clubs, where he was a fierce competitor.

Visiting hours in the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street, on Friday, August 9, from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, August 10, at 11 a.m. in St. James Catholic Church, 560 Page Street in Stoughton. Interment St. Mary’s Cemetery, Canton.
