Bulldog golfers tee off season with dominant win
By Mike BergerThe CHS golf team kicked off the 2024 fall sports campaign with a convincing win over neighboring Stoughton last week, besting the Knights 145-181 at Blue Hill Country Club.
The Bulldogs played exceptionally well in the match with seven of their eight starters shooting under 40 on the nine-hole, par-34 course. Junior Joey Ryan shot one over par to earn match medalist honors while seniors Huck McCready and Travis Thomas both finished one stroke behind with a score of 36.
Also turning in a strong performance with a score of 38 was junior Matt Wright, a newcomer to the team. Rounding out the top eight were Teddy Shuman (39), Mason Wachtendock (39), Aidan O’Toole (39), and Matt Ryan (41).
“We have a very deep roster this season with our eight starters in the first match plus a handful of guys who are ready to play in matches and will be fighting for a spot in the starting lineup all season,” said veteran head coach Mike Barucci. “I’ve seen great improvement from all of our returning golfers and a lot of new faces this year who will certainly be a factor in the success of our team.”
Barucci said the team has a strong group of returning golfers, led by McCready, who is a two-time Hockomock League all-star, and Thomas, who earned his first all-star nod last year and battled with McCready for the top spot. Barucci said both have improved immensely since last season and are poised to again lead the club this year.
The junior class features two accomplished veterans in Joey Ryan and Shuman, with the latter earning a captaincy this year along with McCready and Thomas.
Headlining an impressive crop of newcomers are Wright, Wachtendonk, a transfer student from Blue Hills Regional School, and freshman Matt Ryan, younger brother of Joey Ryan.
Barucci said there are 12 other golfers on the roster who are all playing well and most are ready to be playing in matches at any time.
“Our depth this season is going to help us compete against some of the best teams in the league,” he said. “The Davenport Division got stronger this year with the addition of North Attleboro, so every match will be important if we want to reclaim the division title.
“We have a tough schedule ahead, and with the talent and depth we have this season I am really excited to see how we compete against all of the teams in this strong Davenport Division.”
Rounding out this year’s CHS golf roster are senior Ben Wright; juniors Justin Lesser, Kai Valintine, and Trevor Zack; sophomores John Flood, Cam Guerschuny, Donovan O’Connor and Cam Washburn; and freshmen Chase Brodney, Nolan Gillis, Tyler Hanlon and Harrison Weitz.
The Bulldogs were due to again play Stoughton on Tuesday at Easton Country Club, followed by home matches Thursday (today) against Mansfield and next Tuesday versus Oliver Ames at Blue Hill Country Club. Both matches are scheduled to tee off at 3:15 p.m.
