Houston, Thomas C.

Thomas Charles Houston, 76, of Foxborough, formerly of Sharon, passed away suddenly on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro.

Known as “Bucky” to his family, Tom is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Shirley M. (Schoener) Houston, and his loving children, Jennifer Kane and her husband, Timothy, of Mansfield; Thomas Houston and his partner, Chad Arsenault, of Silver Spring, MD; Amanda Rapp and her husband, Kristoph, of Mansfield; and Laura Hakala and her husband, Derek, of Mansfield. He is remembered with love by his cherished grandchildren Timothy, Kristina, Allison and Matthew Kane; Elizabeth Arsenault-Houston; Sean, Emma and Ryan Rapp; and Olivia, Violet and Theodore Hakala.

Tom was born and raised in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston to parents Thomas E. and Dora E. (King) Houston. A graduate of Catholic Memorial High School, he went on to receive multiple master’s degrees in civil engineering, urban planning, and transportation from Northeastern and Boston universities. Tom founded and operated Professional Services Corporation, PC, a civil engineering consulting firm specializing in municipal and zoning regulations.

Tom held himself to the highest standards and passed his incredible work ethic and desire to make a difference on to his family. His true joys in life were his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends. He never let them forget that they were his number-one priority, and he stood by for whatever support they needed. He and Shirley created a loving home where all were welcome, and he always loved to share a good pun with guests, which often received a good laugh from many, but also the occasional groan from his wife and family.

His favorite place was undoubtedly the family’s cherished Cape house. The home began as a small cottage that Tom built with his own father as a boy. Later, he used his incredible engineering talents and attention to detail to thoughtfully and lovingly expand the home, thereby ensuring his ever-growing family had an amazing place to continue making memories for generations.

His gentle nature, warmth, and love will be greatly missed by so many, and his loss will forever leave a hole in our hearts. We know he will be looking down on us from above and doing his best to ensure his family and friends are well taken care of and loved, which he felt were his greatest responsibilities while here on earth.

A private service in celebration of his life is planned, and he will rest in peace in Rockridge Cemetery in Sharon. Donations in his memory may be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, or the Mass General Corrigan Minehan Heart Center.
