Women’s College Rugby regionals kick off in Canton
By Canton CitizenThis weekend, the women’s Division II and Division III Collegiate Rugby regional playoffs will hit the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton. Student athletes have been competing all fall to qualify for the national playoffs.
The East Regional playoffs feature two days of rugby with teams playing national Round of 16 matches on Saturday followed by national quarterfinal games on Sunday. The winners of the national quarterfinals will book their seat at the 2024 National Championship in Houston, Texas.
Women’s rugby has achieved recent recognition and increased participation following the U.S. Women’s bronze in rugby 7s at the Paris Olympics. Fans can look forward to thrilling matches, showcasing some of the nation’s most talented collegiate athletes.
Women’s Director Angela Smarto said of the action, “This year will be our most competitive season yet within our divisions. If you are in the area, if you are a rugby fan, if you want to try something new, please come on down to the stadium and cheer on your favorite team, or your new favorite team, because I promise you, you’re going to find something exciting to watch.”
