Canton PD, School Dept. investigating home vandalism incident

By

Police continue to investigate a home vandalism incident that occurred on Saturday, November 23, in the York Street area that could involve as many as 60 youths, some of whom are Canton High School students. The vandalism substantially damaged a home under reconstruction, and police also are probing a possible cruelty to animal charge.

So far it is known that at least two CHS football players were disciplined in connection with the incident and did not participate in the Canton-Stoughton Thanksgiving Day game.

Police Chief Helena Rafferty said she has asked other police agencies to assist in the investigation since it may involve youths connected to the families of a Canton police officer and a Canton town official. She also requested the assistance of environmental police in the investigation into possible abuse of a deceased rabbit.

The incident was reported to Canton police on the morning of Sunday, November 24, although the previous night. The homeowner reported damages to drywall and paint estimated at $20,000. There are also video clips that were shared on social media allegedly depicting some of the youths damaging the home and mistreating the dead animal.

Rafferty said police responded to the scene the day after the alleged incident and were still conducting interviews as of Monday morning, December 5.

Superintendent of Schools Derek Folan said it is not the practice of the School Department to discuss student disciplinary action but acknowledged in a statement that it was an “extremely disheartening situation.”

“It is unfortunate that the irresponsible behavior of these students has rippled through our school and community,” Folan said. “We recognize this is a difficult situation for the students and their families. Although the incident occurred outside of school, we immediately conducted a comprehensive investigation, following our handbook and MIAA regulations. We will address any new evidence and information if it comes forward, and we will investigate accordingly.”

Select Board Chair Mike Loughran also addressed the incident at the beginning of Tuesday’s board meeting. “The Select Board wants to acknowledge the situation that some younger members of our community were involved with recently,” Loughran said. “The Canton Public Schools and the Canton Police are conducting a comprehensive investigation. Where there are perceived conflicts of interest, CPD is working with outside investigators to deal with those individuals. Any questions about the investigation should be directed to Canton Police.”

Three residents used the public comment period at the beginning of Tuesday’s meeting to express sadness, frustration and anger at the actions of the students, including the alleged treatment of the rabbit.
