Citizen salutes top teams and athletes of 2024
By Jay TurnerCHS Teams of the Year: Football & Field Hockey
In the same two-month span this fall, two of Canton’s most promising varsity programs took the leap into genuine contender status, proving their mettle against some of the region’s top teams and coming within a few wins of the ultimate prize.
For the field hockey team, all that separated the girls from a trip to the Division 2 state championship game was a handful of second-half goals from a top-ranked Norwood team loaded with talented seniors. Twice this year, in fact, Canton lost to the Mustangs by a 3-2 score; otherwise they were virtually unbeatable, going 19-1 against non-Norwood opponents and cruising to the Hockomock Davenport title.
The CHS football team, meanwhile, racked up seven victories for a second straight season, but it was the quality of those wins that stood out, highlighted by a 12-10 upset of eventual Super Bowl champion North Attleboro. Advancing to the Division 4 playoffs, the Bulldogs would roll past ninth-seeded Tantasqua Regional before losing a heartbreaker to the No. 1 Duxbury Dragons in the state quarterfinals. Refusing to hang their heads, the team then got right back to work preparing for their Thanksgiving matchup with rival Stoughton, capping the season with a dominant win at home.
