CHS wrestlers show off depth at Peckham tourney
By Jay TurnerBouncing back after a tough mid-week loss to North Attleboro, the CHS wrestling team turned in what head coach Nick Matt described as a “great showing” at their annual James Peckham Invitational Tournament held this past Saturday in the Masciarelli Gym.
“We finished sixth overall, with seven wrestlers placing despite no one finishing higher than fourth in their respective brackets,” said Matt. “It was a true team effort, and I’m really proud of how everyone contributed to that result.”
Matt said the fact that the team had four wrestlers reach the podium at the tournament for the first time was a “huge positive” and speaks to the growth that they have seen in the program over the past few years. “While there’s definitely room to improve, it was a solid weekend overall, and we learned a lot from the experience,” he said.
Canton’s top performers at the tournament were senior captain Jimmy Podgurski (285 lbs.) and sophomore Dan O’Mara (126 lbs.), who both went 3-2 with three pins to finish fourth in their weight class. Three other Canton wrestlers — Matt Morin (132 lbs.), Seamus Brown (165 lbs.), and Rob Blochstein (190 lbs.) — also finished 3-2 to take fifth place, while Kyle Kane (144 lbs.) and Matt Sica (157 lbs.) finished sixth. Also recording multiple pins at the meet were Calvin Quinn (106 lbs.), Conor Hanlon (138 lbs.) and Andrew Cox (150 lbs.).
Coach Matt said that Morin and Brown have been particularly impressive through the first half of the season, with the duo combining for a record of 27-9 with 24 combined pins. “Both have shown tremendous improvement this season,” Matt said, “and I’m excited to see them continue to grow as we head into the second half with a 7-5 record as a team.”
The coach also highlighted the continued growth of the JV wrestlers, who recently participated in a joint practice and dual meet with a highly ranked Ashland program and came away with a 72-57 win. “It was a very impressive performance, and I’m proud of how they stepped up against such tough competition,” Matt said. “It was a great experience for everyone involved, and we’ll continue to build on this momentum moving forward.”
The Bulldogs were due to face Davenport foe Foxboro on Wednesday night and will then head to Weymouth for a tournament on Saturday. Next week, the team hosts Mansfield and will travel to Saugus for a quad meet.
