Public input sought for Wentworth Recreation Facility
By Canton CitizenCanton residents are invited to a public workshop for the Mary E. Wentworth Recreation Facility Project on Tuesday, February 11, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Canton Public Library.
Sponsored by Canton’s Walk, Bike & Hike Committee with the support of the Parks & Recreation Department, the project proposes a trail connecting Bolivar Street to Bailey Street along with new recreational programming. It is currently in the planning stages and has received funding from the Canton Community Preservation Committee and the MassTrails grant program.
The firm of Stantec, a global leader in sustainable engineering, architecture and environmental consulting, has been selected to conduct a feasibility study and produce a master plan for the project. Representatives of Stantec, along with Canton community leaders, will be at the February 11 workshop to hear from residents and gather information.
The initial concept includes more than 1.2 miles of accessible elevated boardwalk woven into the landscape and along the water’s edge on helical pilings. Also contemplated are features such as a fitness court, pump track, climbing area, dog park, and sensory path.
“The revitalization of the Mary E. Wentworth Recreation Facility provides much-needed community and recreational space for the town of Canton,” noted Jeff Sullivan, clerk of the WBH Committee. “The project is a big, bold venture in an underserved part of town that could transform 30-plus acres of underutilized land and enhance Canton with additional year-round opportunities for outdoor fitness, water activities, fishing access, and room for walking and biking.”
Now is the time to share your input! Please attend the February 11 workshop to learn more about the project and to share your ideas. For more information, contact the Walk, Bike & Hike Committee at CWBH@town.canton.ma.us.
