Harrington announces candidacy for SB

Accountable to all of Canton. Working for our best future.

“If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life from my family, from my veterinary practice, and from working with committees and organizations in Canton, it’s that you have to be responsible for your actions,” said Susan “Sue” Harrington, who is running for a seat on Canton’s Select Board in the annual town election on April 8.

“I love Canton,” Harrington said. “I’ve lived and worked here for 27 years, and I have always enjoyed being part of the community. That’s why I’ve decided to run for the Select Board — so that I can help make things go well in the town of Canton, including its efforts to make life richer, more enjoyable, and more full of possibility for all of our residents.”

Harrington is a prominent veterinarian and business leader, having owned and operated Randolph Animal Hospital for 27 years. She managed treatment protocols, finances, medical-excellence standards and a team of 20 professionals.

For the town, Harrington currently serves on the Canton Bylaw Modernization Committee, working to make sure that the town’s bylaws, guidelines and procedures are updated and work well for residents, businesses, and town employees alike.

She has also volunteered to help on many local campaigns.

But perhaps she is most recognized by many families for her extensive work designing and sewing costumes for plays at the Hansen Elementary School and Canton High School. “For 20 years, working on all of these plays has been very rewarding,” Harrington said. “Each year, each play, is different. But one thing is always the same — the collaboration of schools, directors, cast, crew and parents. It’s been very meaningful to support the participation of Canton youth in the arts and to work with so many wonderful people on so many productions.”

Harrington served on the board of the music booster group MusicCounts! — acting as its president for 10 years. She was also a founding member of Cantonstock, the annual major fundraiser for MusicCounts! which raises about $20,000 annually to fund programs in all of Canton’s public schools.

“Through all of that,” Harrington said, “I’ve learned that you have to be honest with people — set clear expectations — and work together for a common goal. That’s why I’m committed to advocating for transparency on our Select Board, for accountability for town officials, and will work to ensure that employees have the systems in place and resources necessary to deliver a high quality of service to residents.”

Harrington recognizes the contributions of many residents in our civic life and community and wants to see more people participate. She supports a healthy future for Canton, including through her support of the Sustainability and Climate Action Plan Committee, and hopes to see town buildings incorporate best practices for clean energy generation and use.

The more people are involved, the better it is for the entire town, she said. Harrington firmly believes that the keystone to her progress is her ability to listen and to welcome all voices. To that end, a Canton Voter Survey is posted on HarringtonForCanton.com and Harrington reads every comment posted.

“It’s all about working together, as simple as that sounds,” she said. “My husband and I built a home in Canton where we raised our three children. We are rooted in this town, and we love it. We’re inspired by our excellent schools, the willingness of people to take part and help, and for our rich history. We have a vibrant town, where people show up to support sports, the arts, civic programs and each other.”

Harrington believes that the foundation for a strong future is having a proactive and transparent executive branch — the Select Board.

“I will bring my experience as a business owner and a community leader to my seat on the Select Board,” Harrington said. “Please go out and vote on Tuesday, April 8. Each vote is a voice, and all voices deserve to be heard.” For more information, visit HarringtonForCanton.com.
