Girls track has record-setting day at D3 meet
The CHS girls indoor track team had a great day Friday at the MIAA Division 3 Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The girls finished 11th overall in a deep field of talented teams. All CHS relays scored points, showcasing the depth of the Canton squad.
Head coach Anna Amico gave a special shoutout to team members Chloe Dubuisson, Grace Martinek, Nora Giannacopoulos and Lexi Piazza, who each elected not to compete in an individual event so that the relays could run fresh. “Their team-first mentality is a huge reason we were able to be so successful on Friday night,” said Amico.
The top finisher for the Canton girls was the 4×800 relay team of Giannacopoulos, Klara Redquest, Daphne Golden and Piazza, who placed third overall with a season-best time of 10:18.89.
The 4×200 team of Natalia Mallei, Martinek, Sally Hoban and Dubuisson also posted a season-best finish to place fifth, while the 4×400 team of Lily Duong, Hoban, Martinek and Dubuisson made program history with a record-setting time of 4:13.48 to finish sixth overall.
The other school record set on Friday came courtesy of Dubuisson, who broke the nine-second barrier in the preliminaries of the 55 hurdles and again in the finals to finish fifth in the division.
Other team members who qualified and competed were Hoban, who took 16th in the shot put; Natalie Hales, who placed 23rd in the two-mile; and Shannon Dervan, who finished 26th in the 1,000m.
“I couldn’t be prouder of everyone who competed,” remarked Amico. “All season long they have worked hard and trusted the process so that they would peak and be at their very best during championship season. All of their hard work and buy-in has paid off in a big way and was on full display Friday night.”
Amico said she is awaiting seedings/qualifiers for the Meet of Champions scheduled for this Saturday. Potentially, Canton could have all three relays competing along with Dubuisson in the 55 hurdles. Dubuisson, Hoban and Martinek are also slated to participate in the Girls State Pentathlon.
The CHS boys team, meanwhile, were also well represented at the D3 meet, led by Casey Lee, who started the night off with a great run in the 55 hurdles to finish 13th overall with a career-best time of 8.41seconds.
“I couldn’t be prouder of Casey and his run today,” noted head coach Brian Gotsell. “He’s worked hard all season perfecting his form and it paid off today. I can’t wait to see what he can do in the 110 hurdles this spring.”
The 4×800 team of Riley Swearingen, Sam Siegal, Tristan Grant and Max Mateo also exceeded expectations at Friday’s meet, and thanks to a gutsy leg by Grant, a freshman, they were able to run a season-best time of 9:04 and finish 18th overall. It was a similar story for the 4×200 relay team of Dalton Wong, Angel Assad, Christian Hanlon and Lee, who bested expectations with a 17th-place finish.
Also competing at the divisional meet for the Bulldogs was sophomore Joshua Saint Vil in the high jump.
