Seven Canton Public Schools students have been recognized with 2025 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. They competed against students from across New England at the regional level.

Five of the students received awards in the art category, while two were honored in the writing category. Submissions were based on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

“The creativity showcased in the submissions by our students is indicative of the work being done in Canton schools,” said CPS PreK-12 Visual Arts Coordinator Patricia Palmer. “Every year, we are inspired by the detail, creativity and originality of the work submitted by our students — and this year is no different.”

There are three levels of awards at the regional level: Gold Key, Silver Key and honorable mention. Sophomore Gavin Pushard’s photograph was honored at the gold key level. His piece, titled “Lost in the City,” depicts a young man leaning against a stone wall.

“My subject is taking a break from the busyness of the world by leaning against a cool stone wall,” wrote Pushard. “He is hiding from the outside world, seeking peace.” As a Gold Key winner, Pushard now moves on to the national competition.

The district received three nods at the Silver Key level. Seventh grader Claire Wang was recognized in the Drawing & Illustration category for a piece titled “Sleepy.” Junior Morgan Smith was recognized for Flash Fiction for “Pride’s Lament,” and senior Bella Kowalski was honored in the Photography category for a photograph she calls “A Different Perspective.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to sophomore Amelia Chambon for Drawing & Illustration (“The Red Crown”); senior Ava Klidas for Flash Fiction (“Strokes of Ruby Red”); and junior Caitlin Tureski for Photography (“Determination”).

An awards ceremony for all Silver and Gold Key winners will be hosted by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts on Sunday, March 16, at Tufts University’s Medford Campus, and Gold Key pieces will be featured as part of an exhibit at Breed Memorial Hall.

Founded in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest running awards competition in the country for creative teens. Many notable artists and writers received Scholastic Art & Writing awards as teenagers, including artists Ken Burns, Zac Posen and Andy Warhol, and writers Amanda Gorman, Stephen King and Sylvia Plath.
