Bulldog wrestlers impress at Division 2 central sectionals
By Jay TurnerAfter finishing with a winning record in the regular season for the first time in recent memory, the Canton High varsity wrestling team continued to show signs of improvement with an impressive showing at last weekend’s Division 2 central sectional meet held at Bellingham High School.
One year after qualifying only two wrestlers for states (both seniors), the Bulldogs managed to double that total at this year’s sectional meet, while also nabbing an alternate courtesy of junior Jacob George’s gutsy win in the fifth-place match of the 120-pound division.
Top finishers for Canton included sophomore Matt Morin and junior Owen Sasin, who both overcame an early loss to place third at 132 and 215 pounds, respectively.
Morin’s only loss came in the semifinals against the top seed in the weight class; otherwise he was perfect on the day with two pins and a tech fall.
Sasin also met his match against a tough opponent in the semis but won his other three matches by decision to earn his spot on the podium.
Canton’s two other qualifiers included freshman Calvin Quinn at 106 pounds and junior Connor Hanlon at 138. Both wrestlers finished fourth in their weight class with overall records of 2-2, with Quinn collecting two pins, including one against the third-seeded wrestler from Tri-County Regional.
Three other Canton wrestlers went on to place at the sectional tournament — senior Seamus Brown at 165 pounds, junior Danny Harn at 175 pounds, and senior Jimmy Podgurski at 285 pounds. All three had at least one victory and finished sixth overall in their weight class.
Although hoping for even more qualifiers based on the talent displayed by this year’s roster, head coach Nick Matt said the team showed “solid growth” at this year’s sectionals, which is a reflection of their hard work and the overall improved depth.
The four qualifying wrestlers will now get ready for the upcoming Division 2 meet set for this weekend in Salem.
