Canton’s Hart wraps swim career with record-setting performance
By Jay TurnerCanton native and former Bulldog swimming standout Jessie Hart wrapped up her collegiate career in historic fashion last month with a record-setting time in her final individual race as a member of the St. Michael’s Purple Knights women’s swim team.
Competing at the Northeast-10 Conference Championships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Hart won the 200-yard breaststroke B final in 2:27.67, placing ninth overall and trimming the previous school record by 1.05 seconds in the process. During morning prelims, Hart missed qualifying for the A final by only 0.22 seconds.
Two days earlier, the senior captain nearly set two other school records as she powered her way to sixth in the conference in the 100 breast with a time of 1:07.36 (0.60 seconds off the program-best mark) and combined with three of her teammates to take sixth in the 200 medley relay in 1:51.83 (within 0.61 seconds of the record). She also took seventh place as part of the 400 medley relay with a combined time of 4:06.62.
In her fourth and final season, Hart finished among the team leaders with 17 total wins (11 individual, 6 relay), topping her previous season-best total of 16 from last year. She finishes her career with the 200 breast record in hand and 53 total victories.
