Harrington will be a difference maker on the Select Board

By

Dear Editor:

As vice chair of the Canton Climate Action Committee and president of Canton Residents for a Sustainable Equitable Future (CR4SEF), I am proud to support the election of Susan Harrington for Canton Select Board on April 8. CR4SEF, an all-volunteer Canton group focused on climate education and policy, has unanimously endorsed Harrington because of her dedication to smart and balanced environmental policies tailored to the needs of Canton that benefit all of us now and for our best future.

Harrington has been a strong, steady voice for practical climate solutions that protect the health and safety of our town. She understands how climate change affects our community, including the risks of flooding shown in a new Neponset River Watershed flood map. She supports the work of the town’s Sustainability and Climate Action Plan Committee and appreciates that the soon-to-be-finalized draft plan is based on community and stakeholder engagement, on Canton’s data, and builds on current efforts. She values how the plan will offer a coordinated approach to sustainability that advances clean energy and reduces emissions in an organized, data-driven way.

I am confident that Harrington will work for all of Canton — our youth, seniors, vulnerable communities, environmental justice populations, businesses, and town employees. She values the hard work of our local government and the many residents advocating for better climate policies. Some of the key efforts she has supported include:

* Ongoing efforts with state Senator Paul Feeney to fight Eversource’s rising electricity costs and unfair pricing.

* Ongoing efforts by Canton High School student leaders to develop a Climate Action Plan for a more sustainable and equitable CHS community.

* Passage of a town meeting article in 2023 to create the Canton Climate Action Plan Committee and a sustainability manager position.

* CR4SEF’s initiative for municipal energy aggregation, which led to the creation of Canton Electricity Choice, giving residents and businesses more access to clean energy at stable prices.

* Passage of Canton’s first plastic bag reduction bylaw at town meeting in 2019.

* The annual Canton GreenFest and subsequent Earth Day events, working with CHS students to promote a healthier future.

* Efforts to block Spectra/Enbridge’s plan to expand a high-pressure gas pipeline through Canton.

Susan Harrington’s proactive leadership on the Select Board will make a real difference for Canton — now and for years to come. We hope you’ll join us in supporting her on April 8.
