Doing the right thing on April 8
By GuestDear Editor:
I find it very difficult to write this letter, for I have known many town officials and people involved in town government as friends and former students.
The founding fathers never intended or envisioned career politicians. Their hope was that public-spirited citizens would step forward, work for the common good, and move aside to let in a breath of fresh air and new ideas. Unfortunately, we see that our elected leaders at the local, state and national levels, with few exceptions, are often unwilling to give up their power. That’s what it is all about — power. The ballot box is the answer for term limits.
I have been in the people business all my adult life — as a teacher in the Canton Public Schools and as a member of the Massachusetts Army National Guard for 35 years. The military understands the necessity to change officer assignments every three to five years. They recognize the longer one stays in the same position, the more prone one becomes to believe he or she knows better than anyone else, and not to be open to criticism or new ideas.
The most rewarding experience for an officer is to be in a command position. During my 30 years as a commissioned officer, I served as a commander for 14 years at the company, battalion, and brigade level. Each time it was very difficult to turn over command to someone new, but it had to be done.
There comes a time to say, “Thank you for a job well done,” move on, and open the door to fresh ideas. That time is now! For all of the above reasons, I am voting for Susan Harrington on April 8.
Sincerely,
Frank LaBollita
