Francescon, Umberto ‘Al’

By

We share the passing of Umberto “Al” Vittorio Francescon with sadness and celebrate his well-lived life. He was a man who balanced strength with kindness, determination with compassion, and a driven work ethic with a devotion to family.

Born in Cavasso Nuovo, Italy, on September 30, 1930, Umberto came to the U.S. through Ellis Island in June 1935. After graduating from Roxbury High School, he joined the Army and served his country with honor. He also attended the North Bennet Street School, where he learned masonry.

Umberto established himself in Canton, where he became an outstanding marble mason — a skill he not only shared with his brothers but also passed down to his sons. He proudly belonged to Local 3 Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen for many years and was recently awarded the 75-Year Service Award. Umberto loved hunting, making wine, and tending to his vast garden. He was the family’s gentle, kind, and loving patriarch for many years, raising pheasants and welcoming home an occasional German shepherd who stole his heart.

He is survived by his two sons, Gary Francescon and his wife, Patricia, and Paul Francescon and his wife, Dena, and his daughter, Lisa Wallace and her husband, Arthur. He will be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Anthony, Alexandra and Drusilla, as well as his cherished great-granddaughter, Isla. Umberto also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and a special companion, Irma Bellinson, with whom he shared a love later in life.

Umberto is preceded in death by his parents, Angela Corrado and Vittorio diGiovanni Francescon; his wife, Joan Nelson; his brothers, Victor and Alfred; and his beloved sister, Theresa Forcucci.

Visiting hours will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 10 (today) in the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street. Interment will be at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canton Veterans Department, 801 Washington St., Canton, MA 02021.
