On Thursday, May 8, Canton native Tommy Jenkins will be fighting for a cure, literally, in the annual Haymakers for Hope charity boxing event, Rock ‘N’ Rumble XIV, at the MGM Music Hall at Fenway.

Jenkins, along with 27 other brave fighters residing in the New England area, will be stepping into the ring at this year’s event to combat cancer and raise money for their main beneficiary, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since having its first event in 2011, Haymakers for Hope has raised over $25 million for cancer research, awareness, survivorship, and care. Participants have been training at local partner gyms over the course of the last four months, culminating in the highly anticipated live fight night at the state-of-the-art MGM Music Hall, where they will perform in front of a sold-out crowd.

Jenkins, 31, got involved with Haymakers for Hope to honor the memory of his grandfather, who passed away in 2020 following a battle with an aggressive form of kidney cancer. “It was fast, it was devastating, and looking back, I just wish we had more time,” Jenkins said. “That experience is something I’ll never forget, and it drives me to do my part in the fight against cancer.”

A former two-sport standout at Xaverian Brothers High School and winner of the school’s Athlete of the Year award, Jenkins went on to play four seasons of college hockey at Division III Stonehill. While at Xaverian, he also starred on the football team, winning a D1 Super Bowl title as a junior and earning Catholic Conference All-Star honors as a senior.

Now working in sales, Jenkins is looking forward to stepping into the ring next month while raising much-needed funds to support those affected by cancer and contribute to the search for a cure. He has already surpassed his initial fundraising goal, with more than $23,000 in pledges collected and two weeks to go until fight night.

“[Haymakers for Hope] is an incredible platform that not only challenges me to step up; it also encourages others in my network to get involved by donating to the cause,” said Jenkins. “Every contribution, no matter how big or small, helps fund research and provides support for those who are fighting this terrible disease.”
