Freshmen duo shines as CHS swimmers open 1-1
By Jay TurnerComing off a close loss to Mansfield to open the season, the CHS swim teams returned to the pool last Wednesday at Attleboro to claim convincing victories over the Bombardiers, including a 97-61 win for the girls and an 88-66 win for the boys.
In addition to securing their first victory, several female swimmers also posted impressive qualifying times, led by freshman standout Amanda Walsh, who qualified for states in the 100-yard breaststroke and sectionals in the 200-yard individual medley.
Previously, in the Mansfield meet, fellow freshman Shannon McLaughlin qualified for sectionals in the 500-yard freestyle. Both girls also qualified for sectionals as members of the 200 IM and 200 freestyle relays, with both relays qualifying in the Attleboro meet after coming up one second shy against the Hornets.
Returning swimmer Kim Frazier is also a member of both relay teams. Rounding out the two relays are Brianna Duserick (freestyle) and senior captain Alison McHugh, who has had a sensational start in the breaststroke with two first-place finishes.
Other captains for the girls’ team include seniors Shaina Forte and Sara Civian. Meanwhile, the boys will be led by a pair of seniors in John Whittemore, who finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke against Attleboro, and Edouard el Massih, who had an “incredible finish” in the 500-yard freestyle to come in fourth, according to head coach Lori Mooney.
The meet against Mansfield took place on Sunday, December 11, at Wheaton College, and Mooney described it as “very competitive” despite the fact that it was a loss for both teams.
“Due to an increase in swimmers, we were able to field every event and did so with great success,” she said.
Mooney said Canton has a strong roster this season with a good mix of returning swimmers and talented newcomers.
“We are expecting to have an extremely successful year with many qualifying for sectional and states,” she added.
The Bulldogs’ next meet is their home opener, scheduled for Wednesday, January 4, followed by an away meet versus Randolph on Thursday, January 5.
