Boys’ indoor track has mixed results at State Relays
By Mike BergerIt was an up and down day for the CHS boys’ indoor track team at Saturday’s MSCTA Division 3 State Relays, with the high jump relay besting all other Canton teams with a fourth place finish. The relays were held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
Matt Sidney jumped six feet, five inches in his best of six jumps. CHS head coach Chris Elgar said the one jump in which he cleared 6’5” was so exceptional, in his opinion, that it would have cleared 6’10”.
Chris Boughter just missed at the 5’9” mark, which would have been a new personal best for him, and Derek Seto also just missed setting a personal best at 5’5”.
CHS did have two relays (4×400 and 4×800) that qualified for the state sectionals, with both placing seventh overall.
The 4×800 ran a nice qualifying time of 8:36.48. Leading the way was Cam Huber in 2:01.5, followed by Mike Bronstein in under 2:09, Jake Fruci in 2:13, and Vlad Leopard in 2:12.
The 4×400 relay ran a 3:37.77 behind Obi Nwankwo (54.1 seconds), Sidney (54.8), Tom Kerikas (55.4), and Huber (53.4).
In the shot put, Shane Nordgren had what would have been a personal-best throw in the mid 33’s had it been measurable. Elgar said the relay did not officially measure any throws under 35 feet.
In other meet results, the shuttle hurdle relay placed 12th behind Jon Vaughn, Kerikas, Chris Haidul, and Elias Ghantous. The 4×50 placed 13th out of 33 behind Seto, Evan Feldman, Loris D’Orio, and Connor McLaughlin.
The 4×200 relay had a solid performance, finishing in 1:45.03 behind Seto, Feldman, D’Orio, and Alex Lenkei.
The boys’ junior varsity team will have a meet this Saturday at Franklin High. The next varsity meet will be the Coaches Invitational on January 30. The January 13 meet against Oliver Ames has been rescheduled to February 5 at Franklin.
