Boys’ indoor track tops Sharon to remain undefeated

By

The CHS boys’ indoor track team remains in the running for the Hockomock League Davenport Division championship after a close 49.5-36.5 win over Sharon last week. The boys’ record is 2-0-1 and they could win the division with a victory over Oliver Ames this week.

The girls’ team also competed well, but fell to 1-2 with a loss to Sharon 51-34.

Jon Vaughn was a double winner in the boys’ meet, winning the 50-yard hurdles in 6.5 seconds and the 50-yard dash in 5.6 seconds. Canton also swept the high jump behind Matt Sidney, who won the event with a jump of five feet, 10 inches, Chris Boughter, who finished in second (5’8”), and Derek Seto, who tied for third (5’2”).

Other first-place winners for Canton included Cam Huber in the 600-meter run (1:36.1) and Matt Bronstein in the two mile (10:59.7). The 4×400 relay team also beat Sharon with great contributions from Obi Nwankwo, Sidney, Boughter, and Huber.

Second places were recorded by Saeed Vosoughi, mile, 5:16.8; Jake Frucci, 1,000 meters, 2:59.4; Nwankwo, 300 meters, 42 seconds; and James Grella, shot put, 36 feet, four inches.

CHS boys’ head coach Chris Elgar said the milers and shot putters had great days, and he expects several of his relay teams to place well in the upcoming State Coaches Indoor Relays on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in last week’s girls’ meet, Kate D’Orazio picked up her first win of the season in the 600 with a personal-best time. Other wins were recorded by Chidimma Nwankwo in the shot put and Stephanie Mui, who recorded her first ever win in the high jump.

Multiple event scorers were Mellyn Costello, who finished second in the hurdles and third in the 50-yard dash, and Vicky Tondre, who placed second in the 50-yard dash and 300-meter run.

Kate McClintock, running in her first indoor meet, picked up a second-place finish in the mile. Other Canton placements included Zoe Rosenberg, who finished third in the 1,000 meters with a personal-best time, and Mairead Bagley, who also picked up a third place in the two mile.

“As always, we look ahead to the Hockomock Championships as our goal and are doing everything with the time we have to best prepare for that meet,” said CHS girls’ head coach Ben Mattson. “I am always a believer in everyone getting better, and watching a big chunk of the team get personal-best times every meet has been awesome to see. They are really working hard, and for some of them it is only halfway done.”

Both track teams had a dual meet against Oliver Ames on Wednesday (weather permitting), followed by the State Relays this Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.
