Gymnastics team earns highest overall score
By Kelsey OatesThe CHS gymnastics team earned its highest overall score in Tuesday’s meet against Mansfield High School. The Bulldogs had previously faced Mansfield in the season opener and were able to cut the point deficit almost in half at Tuesday’s meet, resulting in a final score of 112 points to Mansfield’s 129.85 points. Canton’s gymnasts continued to show improvement in all four events, with vault and floor providing the Bulldogs’ best scores.
A boost in both points and morale came in the form of co-captain and junior Becca Pulcini. Returning from an injury, Pulcini earned the team’s highest scores, with an 8.4 on the vault and an 8.0 on the floor.
Gymnastics coach Carla King defined Pulcini as “a great competitor” and said that “everyone loves to see her perform.”
Jessie Brooks was a strong presence as Canton’s second highest scorer, with an 8.0 on the floor and an 8.0 on the vault. Siena Torenzio, Rachel Lebowitz, Liz Mason, and Lizzy Doherty anchored the team on all four events. Torenzio earned a 7.5 (floor) and a 7.4 (vault); Lebowitz scored a 6.8 (floor); Mason posted a 7.0 (floor), a 6.9 (beam), and a 6.3 (bars); and Doherty earned a 7.6 (vault).
More complex routines and cleaner overall performances fueled the gymnasts’ increased scores. Positivity in conjunction with a strong work ethic also aided the Bulldogs’ efforts against a tough opponent. “All the girls have the best attitudes every day, and every meet I am so proud to be their couch,” King said. King also praised her team’s spirit of cooperativeness, calling her gymnasts “the true meaning of a team.” The more established gymnasts have taken the newer teammates under their wings, creating the environment necessary for developing talent and tricky routines. Canton looks to mark its first win in the upcoming meets.
