Canton firefighters battle truck fire at Canton oil co.
By Mike BergerNo one was hurt but damage was substantial following an oil truck fire at Lamparelli Oil Co. on Turnpike Street on Sunday evening, March 5. Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said firefighters received a 911 call from a Lamparelli employee at approximately 10:30 p.m., and responding crews found two truck cabs fully engulfed with the fire also extending to a third oil truck. Hutchinson said the vehicles were parked within 15 feet of a 14,000-gallon propane tank.
The shift commander ordered a second alarm, bringing in additional resources from surrounding towns, and firefighters set up a line to protect the propane tank from the radiant heat. Another crew focused on extinguishing the fire while at the same time protecting the oil tanks to prevent any leaking.
Fire Chief Wendell Robery and Acting Deputy Chief Ed Freitas both responded to the scene, and Canton police evacuated four adjacent homes as a precaution. Firefighters from Westwood, Randolph and Avon provided station coverage while crews from Stoughton, Sharon and Milton responded to the fire. Crews were on scene for approximately two hours, at which point the residents were allowed back into their homes.
Total damages are estimated at $450,000.
