Canton Public Library Trustee Susan Cogliano is running for re-election. She has served as a library trustee since 1997, bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge. During her tenure, the library has undergone a major transformation, both in the physical building and of the overall mission of the library.

Cogliano was instrumental in the renovation and expansion of the library 20 years ago and is now involved in the interior revitalization as the library board addresses the many changes in the way the library is now used. As chair of the board during the pandemic, she made sure the vital communication needed between the board and director remained constant to ensure the library was able to navigate the challenges associated with the pandemic. The desire to satisfy the community’s need for library services in a timely manner while supporting staff and keeping everyone safe was paramount. It was successfully accomplished by increasing remote access to the library, expanding the digital collections, adding Chromebooks, hot spots, curbside pick-up, weekly Facebook story times, and pick-up craft kits.

In addition to her 35-year career as a teacher in Stoughton, Susan served as the president of the Stoughton Teachers Association. She was appointed as a trustee to the Norfolk County Agricultural High School by the governor of Massachusetts and was a member of the board of directors of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. She is a lifelong Canton resident and a Canton High School graduate, which inspired her to become a science teacher.

“I started going to the Canton library at a young age,” Cogliano said. “Both my children participated in the library activities. Now my grandchildren have CPL library cards and enjoy their visits to the library and the weekly crafts. The library layout and the way we get information has changed so much over the years. I used a card catalogue to find a book and an encyclopedia to find information, and library books were stamped on a card before you could take them out. What hasn’t changed is the community feeling. When I walk into the library it is welcoming, alive with life and a sense of community. Whether it is a group of students gathering after school or a few friends meeting at the library, story time, book clubs, a family coming to get books, following a librarian’s suggestion, or just sitting and reading in front of a fireplace, it’s our community: Canton’s Jewel.

“As we look to the next decade, I will bring my years of experience to make sure the library continues to meet the needs of the community.”

Cogliano believes the Canton Public Library is a safe and welcoming community place. It belongs and should be enjoyed by everyone in Canton and she will continue to ensure there is a diverse collection of books, a variety of programs for all ages, and electronic resources available to all.

Please vote for Susan Cogliano for re-election.
