Varsity Girls to perform at CHS

If you have kids in elementary school, chances are you’ve heard of the Varsity Girls, a Boston-based all-girl pop group. The quartet rose to prominence after the release of their single “Be You” this summer. In the last few months, the group has opened for James Taylor, sang the national anthem at Fenway Park and performed at the Boston tree lighting. Now, they’re performing a concert at Canton High School on January 14 at 7 p.m. to benefit the Luce CAPT, the school’s parent/teacher organization.

All proceeds from ticket sales will fund the construction of a new playground at the Luce School.

“Right now, there are two grades that go out for recess at a time,” Luce CAPT president Eileen Chaput said. “But the playground has limited space, so only one grade is allowed to play on the structures at a time.”

After hearing stories of children with nothing to do at recess, Chaput said the Luce CAPT decided to focus the majority of its energy this year to fundraise the $40,000 necessary for the playground expansion. So far, the group has raised $10,000.

“We have racked our brains and really tried to come up with a new type of event that would bring in a decent amount of money,” Chaput said.

The Luce CAPT decided on the Varsity Girls concert after working with local realtor Britta Reissfelder, who knew the musical group’s booking agent.

“The group has done similar performances locally, so we thought it would be a good fit,” Chaput said. “And it’s a unique opportunity because this group really seems on the verge of being recognized by someone big.”

Tickets are being sold for $15 in advance and $20 at the door. To buy advance tickets, parents can download an order form on the Canton Public School’s Virtual Backpack and bring it to the office at any of the town’s three elementary schools or the middle school. Tickets can also be purchased at the Coldwell Banker office in Canton at 6 Washington Street.

Additionally, the first five rows of seats have been designated the VIP area. Not only do VIP ticket holders get an up close and personal view of the hour-plus show, they also will be first in line for the Varsity Girls’ meet and greet following the performance. VIP tickets are going fast and cost $25.

Unlike most events at the high school, each ticket designates a specific seat in the auditorium, so buying tickets in advance can help guarantee a closer seat.

“It’s a small venue,” Chaput said. “So every seat is a good seat.”
