Boys’ hockey team sweeps holiday tourney

By

The Canton High boys’ hockey team fared well last week, winning both contests in the holiday tournament that featured all four high schools who call Metropolis rink their home.

With wins over Blue Hills Regional and Mansfield, the Bulldogs were crowned champions of the first holiday classic tournament. The tournament also benefitted two great charities:  the Matt Brown “Brownie Points” Fund and the Scott M. Herr CHS Scholarship Fund.

“Overall, the holiday tourney went well,” head coach Brian Shuman said. The four teams (Canton, Westwood, Norwood, Blue Hills) that play at Canton’s rink have been floating around this idea for years, and it was great to use our first tournament as an opportunity to raise money for two wonderful causes.”

Canton’s first opponent, Blue Hills Regional, did not present the Bulldogs with much of a challenge as they breezed through to a 7-0 victory.

In Canton’s second game, the Hornets forced the Bulldogs to dig a bit deeper and come from behind to earn the result.

Canton trailed 1-0 heading into the third, but exploded with an inspired four goal period to win 4-1.

“The Westwood game was our best effort of the young season,” Shuman said. “We played hard for 45 minutes and showed a lot of maturity and mental toughness coming back from a one goal deficit after two periods. Even in the third period, there were several times where we could have let a bad situation get the best of us, but we fought through some penalties and continued to put the pressure on Westwood.”

The Bulldogs combined for 11 goals in the two wins. Goal scorers were: Greg Boyd (2), Brian Brooks, Nick O’Connor (4), Matt Lennon, JC Marcone and Mike Denehy (2).

O’Connor tucked away four goals in the 7-0 win over Blue Hills. He also recorded an assist in the game.

Denehy scored two important goals against Westwood. The Bulldogs were leading 2-1 with five minutes left in the game when Denehy netted his first to give Canton some breathing room. With one minute to play, he added his second to seal the deal for the Bulldogs.

Canton played their first Hockomock League game yesterday against Oliver Ames.
