Indoor track teams post mixed results vs. Sharon
By Mike BergerThe CHS girls’ track team earned its first victory of the season last week, beating Sharon 52-43 Thursday at Boston University. The boys’ team competed hard, but lost to the Eagles. Both teams are now 1-2 in league competition.
Mellyn Costello and Vicky Tondre both earned double victories to lead the girls’ team. Costello won the 55-meter dash in 7.89 seconds and the 55-meter hurdles in 9.54 seconds. Tondre won the 300-meter race in 44.59 seconds and returned to win the long jump at 15 feet, eight inches.
Other event winners for Canton included Michaela Kelly in the 600 (1:49.08) and Luckesha Joseph in the shot put (27’6”).
Also scoring points for the girls’ team were Ericka Boughter, third in the 55-meter dash in 8.7 seconds, and third in the long jump at 12 feet, two inches; Kellie Stigas, third, 300, 49.78 seconds; Jackie Merrigan, third, 600, 1:55.97; and Caroline Haidul, second, shot put, 26’11”. Mairead Bagley also had a fine race in the mile, placing fourth overall at 6:08.72.
For the boys’ team, individual event winners included Derek Seto in the 55-meter dash (6.95 sec.), Obi Nwankwo in the 300 (37.75 sec.), and Cam Huber in the 600 (1:24.79). The 4×400 relay team of Jake Fruci, Mike Rota, Evan Feldman and Huber also ran a great time of 3:41.88 and finished third overall.
Other point scorers for the boys included Fruci, second, 1,000m, 2:49.11; Joe Sabatino, third, 55m hurdles, 10.44 seconds; Shane Nordgren, second, shot put, 38’11”; Julian Malbranche, third, shot put, 35’8”; Huber, third, high jump, 5’6”; and Seto, long jump, 16’10”.
Head coach Ben Mattson said both teams also had good showings at the State Freshman-Sophomore Meet, held January 8 at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. He noted that Michaela Kelly placed fourth in the 600 and Dan Bronstein had a big personal improvement in the mile, finishing with a time of 5:39.
Both teams will compete against Oliver Ames on Thursday, January 12, beginning at 4 p.m. at Boston University.
