CHS swimmers impress after long holiday layoff

After a 20-day break between meets that included all of December vacation, both of the Canton High swim teams kicked off the new year with impressive performances in back-to-back meets last week, capped off by a convincing double victory over nonleague Randolph.

In the meet against the Blue Devils, held last Thursday at Randolph High, several Canton swimmers posted noteworthy times, leading to wins of 82-58 for the boys and 71-50 for the girls.

For the boys’ team, Scott Rosenblatt and Kyle Hanscom led the way in the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:13 and 1:15, while Eric Newton impressed in the 100-yard fly, finishing in 1:08. Scott Buresh also had a strong performance in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:14.8.

The girls’ were led by Julie Newton in the 100 fly (1:40), Abbey Willis in the 200-yard individual medley (2:53), Lauren Winter in the 200 freestyle (2:51), and Rachel McHugh in the 500 freestyle (7:36).

The Bulldogs also hosted North Attleboro last week, and while neither team picked up the win, head coach Lori Mooney was impressed with the overall effort.

“It was a great meet for both as we once again came very close to winning,” said Mooney. “We usually go with the expectations of reaching personal bests.”

The girls’ meet came down to the final relay (93-79) and highlighted the squad’s impressive depth in several events.

Bulldog swimmers Amanda Walsh, Brianna Duserick and Kim Frazier took the top three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Piper Conway and Julia Guerini placed second and third in the 200 freestyle. The girls also took second, third and fourth in two events — the 200 IM behind Shannon McLaughlin, Walsh and Shay Connolly, and the 50-yard freestyle behind Emily Breviglia, Duserick and Conway.

Other top performers included Willis and Felicia Lee in the 100 fly, and Frazier, Isobel Heck, and Shaina Forte in the 500 free.

The boys also fell to NA (99-70), but several swimmers posted solid times, including Rosenblatt in the 200 free; Yanni Papadopoulos and Christian Hobbes in the 50 free; Newton (first), Kevin Wing, and Steven Hellmuth in the 100 fly; and Brian McCarthy, Papadopoulos, and Hanscom in the 100 free.

The Bulldogs were scheduled to compete against Sharon on Wednesday and then host Franklin on Friday at Blue Hills Regional.
