Red-hot CHS boys lax wins 4 in a row
By Jay TurnerMomentum has been steadily building for the CHS boys lacrosse team, which now sits alone in second place in the Hockomock Davenport Division after Monday’s blowout road win at Taunton.
The 20-4 victory was the Bulldogs’ most lopsided result of the season and came just days after their closest game to date — a 12-11, come-from-behind win at Nipmuc Regional during the April vacation week. Counting the two most recent victories, the team has now won four straight games and boasts an overall record of 5-2.
In their trip out to Upton last week to face Nipmuc, the Bulldogs showed their potential as a team — and quite a bit of heart — as they clawed their way back from a four-goal deficit to win by won one in overtime.
Freshman Ethan Keleher came through with the game-tying goal with 20 seconds left in regulation and fellow freshman Oisin Brogan buried the game-winner in OT off a pass from senior AJ Thomas. Countless other Canton players also stepped up to help fuel the second-half rally for the Bulldogs.
“Not to sound cliché, but it was the entire team effort that helped spark the comeback,” said head coach Tommy Galvin. “The defense was getting stops, [goalie] Pat Drury was making saves, and the offense was sharing the ball and making unselfish plays. We had seven different goal scorers and the OT winner was by a defenseman.”
“I think this win showed our depth as a team and willingness to handle adversity,” added Galvin. “We played a good team in a tough environment on the road and came back from a five-goal deficit in the fourth quarter. I’m just really proud of everyone.”
Michael Thomas led all Canton players with four goals in the win and senior Jeff Chaput finished with three goals and three assists. Drury also had a monster game in goal, finishing with 19 saves.
Now just a game behind Mansfield for the Davenport Division lead, the Bulldogs were due to host nonleague Bridgewater-Raynham on Wednesday with Attleboro coming to town this afternoon. The team then heads to Foxboro to take on the Warriors in a key division battle on Wednesday, May 3, at 4 p.m.
