The red-hot CHS girls’ ice hockey team continued its winning ways last week, improving to 7-4 overall with home victories over division opponents Westwood (3-2) and Dover-Sherborn (12-1).

The two wins brought the Bulldogs to 5-1 in the SEMGHL West Division and extended their season-long winning streak to four games heading into this week’s road showdown with a tough Hingham team.

Meanwhile, the girls proved that they could beat a top-tier team with Wednesday’s victory over Westwood, which had gone into the game atop the standings with a division record of 6-0-1.

Down 2-1 after the opening period, Canton came back with two goals in the second to take a 3-2 lead and then clamped down on defense in a scoreless third period.

Junior Meaghan McKenna led the way with two goals, while Stephanie Rizzitano added one goal and one assist. Several players chipped in with at least one assist, including Michelle McNeil, Haley Gaughan, Katie Kelleher, and Jill Eckler.

Goalie Emily Buckley was also a key factor as she came up with some big saves in the third to help preserve the win.

The Bulldogs then went on to dominate Dover-Sherborn on Saturday, scoring four goals in all three periods to earn their most lopsided win of the season.

Rizzitano was the offensive star in this one as she finished with a team-high five points, including a hat trick and two assists. McKenna, Gaughan, and Meghan Lennon each added two goals, while Casey Considine scored her first goal of the year. McNeil and Jackie Martin rounded out the scoring for Canton.

Backup goalie Nicole Sennett saw some action in the third period and made a few nice plays, including a great poke check save.

Reflecting on the two wins last week, head coach Kelly Rider said she was impressed with the team’s performance and also “very happy” with their place in the standings at the midpoint of the regular season.

“Not only were we able to demonstrate how well we can move the puck in both games, but we got an important four points for our league,” said Rider. “With everyone in the lineup and how we continue to win, I think our confidence has grown and we are really starting to come together and play more consistently as a team.”

This week the Bulldogs had Hingham on Wednesday, followed by a road game Saturday against King Philip.
