Canton DPW details summer roadwork plans
By Mike BergerThe Canton Department of Public Works (DPW) plans to focus a lot of its roadway and sidewalk improvements in the downtown area during the summer construction season.
In late May, crews began working on Washington Street to the Stoughton town line, finishing curbing, sidewalk and pavement.
DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta said the goal is to finish a hot mix asphalt top by mid-August. Traffic will be one way or detoured most of the project. People should expect delays using Washington Street, he said.
Trotta anticipates that starting in mid-August through the end of September, crosswalk rehabilitation work will be done in the center of town. The work will be done during nighttime hours to lessen the traffic impact. This followed a vote by the Select Board on June 20 to spend $450,000 from the supplemental roadway funding approved at the recent annual town meeting for additional Washington Street paving and sidewalks from the center of town to Walnut Street.
Trotta also announced that water service renewals will be conducted on Randolph Street (Washington Street to Randolph Terrace) and Bolivar Street (Washington Street to Bolivar Pond), with a water main replacement scheduled on Old Randolph and Randolph Terrace.
All three projects will start in the late summer and last through the end of October. The roads will be closed and detoured at times. Paving will be done in the spring of 2024.
Trotta said some paving work will also be done in the Cedarcrest Road area as funding allows. He stressed that summer roadwork plans, as always, are subject to change.
