Topgolf eyes late 2023 opening for new Canton location
By Mike BergerConstruction continues in earnest on the new Topgolf facility on Dedham Street, which is steadily taking shape and looks to be on target for an anticipated opening in late 2023.
The outline of the facility has been established and the frame of the building is now in place, as are the towering poles and netting that will form the perimeter of the outfield area and prevent the golf balls from leaving the property.
When completed, the state-of-the-art entertainment complex, located at the former Cumberland Farms headquarters site adjacent to I-95, will feature over 90 climate-controlled hitting bays on three floors, a large sports bar and restaurant, private event spaces, a 28-foot video wall and hundreds of HDTVs.
Unlike a traditional golf driving range, Topgolf promises a completely unique “golf entertainment experience,” powered by the company’s Toptracer technology that allows players to track their ball’s speed, distance, curve and height as they take aim at the large outfield targets. Points are tracked automatically and players can choose from more than a dozen different games that are rated based on difficulty from beginner to advanced.
Officially called Topgolf Boston – Canton, the facility will be the first of its kind in Massachusetts and one of only two in the New England region along with the soon-to-be-completed Topgolf in Cranston, Rhode Island. Operating as a subsidiary of Topgolf Callaway Brands Corp. following a merger with the popular golf equipment manufacturer, Topgolf currently boasts 80 locations across the United States and nine international locations with nearly a dozen others listed on its website as “coming soon.”
In 2021, local residents got their first taste of Topgolf when Fenway Park served as a stop on the Topgolf Live Stadium Tour, in which iconic stadiums are converted into temporary Topgolf experiences with players teeing off from the stands.
The property at 777 Dedham Street first caught the attention of Topgolf officials back in 2015, and three years later, the town showed its commitment to the project by creating new zoning that specifically allowed for the development of an indoor/outdoor golf facility on the 10-acre site. While eager to move forward, Topgolf would later encounter repeated delays tied to the Dedham Street improvement project — a series of infrastructure upgrades spearheaded by MassDOT — but momentum picked up again in 2021 and Topgolf was finally able to break ground this past fall.
In announcing the groundbreaking in November 2022, then Select Board Chair John Connolly hailed the arrival of Topgolf as a “hole-in-one for Canton,” noting that the project will generate upwards of 400 new jobs while bringing in an additional $800,000 per year in tax revenues for the town. The Select Board has also since approved a liquor license for the company and the town stands to receive additional revenues through the local meals tax once the restaurant is operational.
Topgolf recently created a dedicated page on its website for the Canton facility — topgolf.com/us/canton — and visitors have the option of signing up for email and text alerts in order to be notified when the venue is opening.
