Tondre, Huber lead track teams at D3 championships
By Mike BergerThe CHS indoor track team had a very respectable day at the Division 3 Championships, held last Friday at the Reggie Lewis Track Center in Boston. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams produced an event champion, while both squads finished ninth overall out of 36 teams.
Senior Vicky Tondre won the long jump at 17 feet, three and a quarter inches — almost a foot better than the next opponent — and fellow senior Cam Huber edged Jair Cruikshank by less than a second at 1:24.30 to win the 600 meter race.
The boys’ 4×400 relay team also impressed at the meet, finishing second overall behind seniors Obi Nwankwo, Evan Feldman, Jake Fruci, and Huber. Junior Mellyn Costello also placed fourth in the long jump at just over 16 feet and fourth in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.21 seconds.
Huber, Tondre, and the members of the 4×400 relay team will advance to the All-State meet on Sunday. Head coach Ben Mattson said the top three place winners in each division get an automatic bid, and the next 12 best (based on time) in each event from all four divisions also can advance. Mattson said it was an “awesome day” for CHS and he was proud of everyone who competed.
Other Canton placements included sophomore Michaela Kelly, who finished ninth in the 600 in 1:42.06, and Tondre, who finished 10th in the 55-meter dash. For the boys’ team, Nwankwo finished sixth in the 300 with a time of 36.8 seconds, and Fruci finished 15th in the 1,000 with a time of 2:47.09.
Three relay teams from the girls’ team also competed. The 4×200 relay team finished 13th out of 20 teams behind Tondre, Costello, Kelly, and sophomore Jackie Merrigan. The 4×400 team included junior Erika Boughter, sophomore Kellie Stigas, senior Mairead Bagley, and sophomore Courtney Loughnane. The 4×800 team included sophomore Alyssa Wysocki, Bagley, senior Audrey Cilento, and Loughnane.
