Track relay teams shine in state finals
By Mike BergerIt was another excellent weekend for the CHS indoor track relay teams at Sunday’s state relay finals. The girls finished fifth overall with strong performances in the sprint relay, the 200-meter relay and the shot put.
For the boys’ team, the sprint medley and the high jumpers had strong showings.
The highest finish was earned by the girls’ shot put relay, which finished second overall. Out of 60 shot putters, senior Amarachi Njoku tied for second overall with a best throw of 35 feet, 3.75 inches — three feet away from the winning throw of 38 feet, 2.25 inches.
Junior Chidimma Nwankwo placed 10th overall with a best throw of 32 feet, 10 inches, and freshman Angelina Salcedo placed 41st with a best throw of 28 feet, three quarter inches.
The girls’ 4×50 team of Shirley Han, Keishorea Armstrong, Anna Amico and Samantha Smith placed fifth with a time of 25.50 seconds. Earlier the unit finished sixth out of 19 teams, with the fastest eight relays going to the finals.
The girls’ 4×200 relay (Vicky Tondre, Armstrong, Amico and Smith) finished ninth out of 28 relays with a time of 1:49.24. The girls’ 4×400 relay (Kori White, Han, Colleen Healey and Kate D’Orazio) ran a 4:24.54 and placed 20th overall.
“Overall it was a great day with some nice performances,” coach Kerri Oldmixon said.
The boys’ 1,600 sprint medley finished 12th out of 19 teams with a combined time of 3:43 — more than six seconds faster than its time in the Class C relays. Leading off was Christian Bates with the 800-meter leg (2:00.6), followed by two very fast 200-meter legs by Jordan Guyton and Jon Vaughn, and a strong 400-meter leg time of 55 seconds by Marty Fauche.
Coach Chris Elgar noted that the 4×200 relay had trouble with one of the handoffs and was disqualified. “That is crippling in a race so short,” Elgar said.
The high jump relay did not score, but Matt Sidney continued his hot streak with another six-feet, four-inch jump as he finished third overall out of 12 competitors. Vaughn recorded a personal best jump of five feet, six inches and nearly hit the five-foot, eight-inch mark.
Both teams are now preparing for the Hockomock League Championship Meet Saturday in Boston at the Reggie Lewis Track Center. The meet begins at 8:45 a.m.
