Swim teams end regular season on a high note
By Jeffrey PicketteIt was a busy week for the CHS girls’ and boys’ varsity swim teams, with both squads losing a meet at Dover-Sherborn last Wednesday, bouncing back to beat Franklin last Thursday and then taking part in the Hockomock League Championships last Saturday.
Both squads came in sixth out of nine teams at the Hockomock Championships, a result that head coach Lori Mooney considered “amazing.”
“Our kids did fantastic,” Mooney wrote in an e-mail to the Citizen. “It was the individual times that made it even more successful. We had kids smashing their times. The venue contributed to the hype each kid felt when competing. Being around all those swimmers at once gave them such a competitive edge, and boy did they perform.”
On the girls’ side, Emma McHugh dropped seven seconds in the 200-yard freestyle and Andrea Salive shed four seconds off her time in the 200-yard individual medley. Fifteen additional swimmers on the girls’ team were able to record “personal best” times in their respective races.
For the boys, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Scott Buresh, Eric Newton, James Frazier and Chris LeDonne shed six seconds off their time, while five boys dropped significant time in the 100-yard freestyle event.
Earlier in the week, Evan Leibovitz came in first in the 100-yard backstroke and Frazier came in first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a loss at Dover-Sherborn. And against Franklin, Alison McHugh and Catherine Hunter finished first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle event.
Both teams ended the season with identical records of 5-6, a significant improvement from the 3-6 and 2-7 records the girls and boys posted last season. Mooney said assistant coach Chris Murtagh deserves a “ton of credit” for both teams’ success this season.
While the season comes to an end for most of the swimmers, five will move on to the Sectional Swimming and Diving Championships at M.I.T this Saturday.
For the girls, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Andrea Konopka, Alison McHugh, Brianna Duserick and Misty King will compete, and Konopka will also take part individually in the 100-yard fly. LeDonne is the boys’ representative, racing in the 50-, 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle events and in the 100-yard fly.
