Robert Barbaglia, 89, a lifelong resident of Canton, died Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Highgate Manor surrounded by his family.

He was born in Canton to Innocenzo Barbaglia and Carolina Stella Barbaglia on September 22, 1922, and is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Shirley Parish Barbaglia. He was the loving and devoted father of Cheryl Barbaglia DeMarre and her husband, James, of Lexington, South Carolina, and proud grandfather of Patrick and Robert.

Mr. Barbaglia was active in the Canton Town Club and was one of the founding members of the Canton Sons of Italy Men’s Lodge, serving as their first president. He joined the Marine Corps in 1940, and as a proud member of the 4th Marines Division he served for six years on the front lines in the battles of Saipan, Tinian, Roi-Namur and Iwo Jima during WWII.

Mr. Barbaglia is also survived by his sisters, Natalie Digirolamo of Hayward, CA, and Diane Lamplough of Stoughton. He is predeceased by his brothers, Guerrino and Luciano. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews and many grandnieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Monday morning, March 5, in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to the Jimmy Fund, c/o Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284-9168. Arrangements by the Roache-Pushard Funeral Home, 210 Sherman Street.
