2 remain hospitalized after head-on crash on York St.

Two Canton High School students remained in serious condition at Boston Medical Center for head and trauma injuries sustained from a two-car, head-on collision on York Street last Friday, March 2, around 6 p.m.

Four other CHS students were released from Norwood Hospital during the weekend for various injuries, and the driver of the second vehicle was released from Good Samaritan Hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by Canton Police and a State Police accident reconstruction team. CPD Lt. Helena Findlen said Monday that police are awaiting the State Police report.

“York Street is a tough road to begin with,” she said. “We are looking at road conditions combined with other factors.”

The accident occurred around 307 York Street, which is located around a winding curve. The speed limit for the road is 25 miles per hour.

The six students were riding in a four-door Honda Civic, while the other vehicle was described as a pickup truck. Both vehicles were traveling on opposite sides of the road.

Fire Chief Charlie Doody confirmed that five ambulances — three from Canton and one each from Norwood and Randolph — were needed to transport the injured to area hospitals. In all, 13 firefighters and paramedics as well as several Canton police officers responded to the scene, as did many area residents.

School Superintendent Jeff Granatino sent an email to parents and students on Saturday notifying them of the accident. He sent another email Sunday night indicating that four students had been released from the hospital while two others remained hospitalized.

“Our staff and team of counselors will be ready to welcome back our students tomorrow (Monday), and support will be in place for students and staff,” Granatino said in the email. “I realize at times like these, there is a desire to know more information than what I can communicate, but as I mentioned yesterday, for reasons of confidentiality, I cannot share the names of the students or any details on their conditions. We will continue to keep our students and their families in our thoughts and prayers during this critical time.”
