Cobb’s Corner evacuated after tractor-trailer crash

By

Power outages and traffic problems were reported in the vicinity of Cobb’s Corner on Thursday morning, June 13, after a large tractor-trailer struck power lines at 1 Washington Street.

Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said one utility pole came down and another was leaning. High-voltage power lines were draped over the truck, and a civilian vehicle entering the Rite Aid plaza was also caught under live wires. The operators self-extricated prior to the arrival of first responders.

Hutchinson said there were numerous high-voltage lines and telephone lines down with two poles actively burning and seven poles in all involved. Firefighters and police from Canton and Sharon assisted in evacuating all civilians in the area and shutting down traffic. Eversource arrived and shut down power in the area.

Hutchinson said the tractor-trailer was carrying hazardous corrosive cargo, but an inspection showed that the cargo was not compromised. Power in the area remained out all day and Washington Street was closed for several hours before one lane reopened. CFD was on scene for over three hours, and Canton Police and Eversource were on scene until the late evening. There were no injuries reported.

Hutchinson said if power lines fall on a motorist’s vehicle, Canton Fire recommends staying in your vehicle with the ignition on and calling 911. “If you absolutely have to escape the vehicle, such as if the vehicle catches fire, jump from the vehicle as far as you can,” he said. “Don’t step. Touching the car and the ground at the same time could be deadly.”
