Highway truck fire causes major traffic delays

By

Route 128 was closed for almost an hour and traffic was rerouted onto Canton streets, leading to major delays during rush hour as firefighters from Canton and several neighboring towns battled a ferocious truck fire at the junction of I-93 and Route 138 on Tuesday afternoon, September 3.

Fire Lt. John Hutchinson said the truck was a pavement sealer that contained 200 pounds of propane and petroleum-based asphalt sealer. The first three engines responding to the scene were not able to extinguish the fire as the flames were being fed by the hazardous cargo and the venting propane tanks.

Hutchinson said firefighters eventually knocked down the fire as Canton and Sharon sent tankers for water supply and crews on scene laid over 2,000 feet of supply line down the exit ramp from a hydrant on Washington street. No injuries were reported and the scene was cleared at approximately 5 p.m.
