Staiti seeks reelection as County Commissioner

Commissioner Richard R. Staiti of Canton, a winner in the Democratic Primary, will be a candidate for reelection for Norfolk County Commissioner in the November 5 general election.

Over the past four years, Staiti and his fellow commissioners have successfully managed and distributed over $128 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grants to the 28 cities and towns across the county, including close to $5 million in ARPA funds to the town of Canton. Improvements to the water and sewer infrastructure, equipment for first responders, improvements to the Hemenway housing complex, improvements to roads and culverts, and a large grant to support the creation of the Paul Revere Museum are just a few of the many ARPA grants awarded to the town of Canton during the first term of Commissioner Staiti.

Relying upon his many years of experience as a teacher and school administrator, Staiti served as chair of the Norfolk County Agricultural High School for two years. A new administrative team was hired and the school continues to be one of the best in the state in this important field.

A longtime proponent of regionalization, Norfolk County now provides the service of the sealer of weights and measures for not only Canton, but several other communities, with additional towns soon to be added to the growing list.

A new playground at Wollaston Recreation Facility, a new dome roof for the Dedham Superior Court, and strong support for our veterans through the county RSVP program are just a few of the other improvements and programs that have taken place over the past four years.

A lifelong resident of Canton, Staiti also serves as town moderator and previously served for nine years as a member of the Board of Selectmen (newly renamed the Select Board), being elected chair three times. He also previously represented Canton on the Norfolk County Advisory Board, which oversees all county finances and spending.

“The pandemic changed our life and forced us to rethink the way things are at present,” Staiti said. “We have seen many positive changes take place over the past years. I have consistently asked questions and demonstrated a willingness to think outside the box to find solutions that are fair and reasonable. As revenues dwindle, we need to investigate and explore new ways of producing revenue without increasing taxes.”

The son of working-class parents, Staiti has been endorsed by many unions such as the New England Regional Council of Carpenters Local 346, Plumbers and Gasfitters Local 12, Iron Workers Local 7, Sheet Metal Workers Local 17 and Pipefitters Local 537, as well as the Norfolk County Central Labor Council and many local Democratic town committees.

The father of five children, Staiti is also a member of the board of directors for the Canton Association of Business and Industry (CABI) and a trustee of the Salah Foundation.

“It has been an honor to serve as your commissioner the past four years and to help make change happen,” said Staiti. “But our work is not done, and I respectfully ask for your vote on Election Day, November 5.”
