CPA organizers grateful for support, hopeful for future

Dear Canton voters:

To the CPA supporters and voters: My heartfelt thanks and gratitude for your support of the Community Preservation Act. You worked hard to raise awareness for CPA and you have certainly laid a foundation for further education about CPA in our community. You took the long view, knowing in the future we will still need to protect our open space, preserve our historic sites, create outdoor recreation, and assist those who need housing. You know that $44 a year is a small investment to make for big gains in our town. Kudos to you. A special thanks to Bruce Rohr for your tireless commitment to the campaign and in organizing and motivating everyone to participate.

To the CPA opponents: I hope you will take a second look when it comes up again. I encourage you to see what other towns have accomplished at www.communitypreservation.org for a small investment each year. Taking the long view can be difficult when we are in tough economic times, but those are precisely the times when we need to be in charge of our future and not leave it to developers, or big business or politicians who focus on the near term.

CPA is designed to help communities plan for the future — saving our town’s (and our country’s) historic sites such as the Paul Revere copper mill site; ensuring affordable housing for our seniors, veterans, and municipal workers, especially as existing low-income restrictions expire; creating outdoor recreation where there is none (York Street); and preserving our precious open space for recreation and drinking water quality. Community preservation means preserving a quality of life that is Canton. Please consider this when it comes up again.

To the non-voters: Whatever your opinion, where were you? It is within your power to keep this a great town; do not leave it up to the next guy. Soldiers are dying every day to ensure that people around the world have the same right to determine their future that you and I do. It takes a village to make a village, and for a few minutes each year you can make a difference in this community. Please let your voice be heard and vote when there’s an election.
