Town launches hurricane relief donation drive

The Canton Select Board and Town Administrator Charles Doody are pleased to announce the launch of a town-sponsored donation drive to support those affected by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina.

The town is asking businesses and residents to donate an assortment of needed items, which the Armstrong Company of Canton has generously offered to transport to the Asheville, North Carolina area for distribution. The region was among the hardest hit by Helene, a devastating tropical cyclone that caused widespread destruction, including road closures, flooding, billions of dollars in property damage, and more than 230 deaths across the southeastern United States.

A collection center will be set up at the former St. Gerard’s Church at 1860 Washington Street on Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations can also be dropped off any day next week (Nov. 4-8) at the headquarters of the Police Department (1492 Washington Street) or Fire Department (99 Revere Street) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The distribution center asks that all donated items be new and in their original packaging. The requested items are listed below:

Personal items: Baby formula, diapers and wipes, personal hygiene items, children’s toys, cell phone chargers and blocks, Rubbermaid plastic containers, empty gas cans, sleeping bags/air mattresses, new winter clothing

Protective gear: Work gloves, dust masks, goggles, chemical-resistant Tyvek suits, EZ-up tents/camping tents, power strips, flashlights and batteries, heavy-duty personal protective equipment

Construction items: Extension cords (both thick yellow generator cords and heavy-duty), hammers, screwdrivers, drills, screws/nails, large tarps, contractor bags, wheelbarrows/wagons, dollies, tripod work lights, Home Depot/Lowe’s gift cards

Cleanup equipment: Metal shovels/rakes/brooms, hoses/spray nozzles, cleaning supplies, rags, dehumidifiers, generators, chainsaws
