The Canton High School boys’ tennis team is off to a 1-1 start as of last week. After a loss at home last Tuesday, the team bounced back with a huge win against Dedham just two days later.

The Bulldogs’ loss to Sharon was a well-played match, according to head coach Leo Nelson, but it was one that left them down 5-0 at the end.

“Senior Mitch Kayserman played well against a very strong Vivek Nangia,” said Nelson, adding that “our number one doubles, seniors Alex Geyyer and Logan Cerruti, played a super strong team.” Unfortunately, their solid play wasn’t enough to make the difference against the Eagles.

But on Thursday, that strong play did indeed give the Bulldogs the edge. Winning 5-0 at home against the Dedham Marauders, the Bulldogs saw things come together in both their singles and doubles matches. Playing first singles, Kayserman dominated the court, winning in straight sets 6-4, 7-5. Adding depth to singles were sophomore Sam Riemer, who won his match 6-1, 6-4, and junior newcomer Andrew Sulkala, who defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-4 for the first win of his CHS tennis career.

The two other wins came in doubles play. Geyyer and Cerruti “won with a strong 6-1, 6-1,” according to Nelson, and seniors Matt Garcia and Alex Garcia rounded out the day with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Coach Nelson added, “The doubles started to get their timing, communication, and aggressiveness of attacking the net against Dedham.”

Nelson is confident about this year’s squad. “I feel that we have the depth and the fundamental skills that are needed to do well in a league like the Hock,” he said. He stressed that this week would be an integral one, as “it will give an idea of how we really stand in the Hockomock, playing two teams we have struggled with in the past, Foxboro and Mansfield.”
