Baseball team opens season with win, loss

The Canton High baseball team opened the season with mixed results last week, crushing Sharon 9-2 with a great display of hitting before falling to Dedham 12-7 in a game plagued by inconsistent pitching and defense.
The Bulldogs are hoping to improve upon last year’s record of 6-13 and a second round appearance in the playoffs.
This year’s captains are seniors Matt Potts, Andrew Vinciguerra and Chris Cammarata, and junior captain Drew Blake. Other players include Andrew Lerner, Michael Foley, Ryan Dwyer, Kyle Delsignore, Ian Flavin, Justin Rudy, Steve Mullaney, Jimmy Fitzgerald, Sam Larson, Ryan Nagle, Robert Wyatt Golledge, and Leo Murphy.
Head coach Junior Medina said he has a young group that’s excited to play baseball. He believes the team will hit well, but how far they go will ultimately depend on their starting pitching. Medina believes that Fitzgerald is his best starter; however, the second and third pitchers are still to be determined. Candidates include Larson, Flavin, and Murphy.
The Bulldogs came out swinging in their home opener against Sharon last Tuesday. Blake went 2 for 3 with a double, Potts had three hits, and Rudy had two hits. All three players had two RBIs apiece. Fitzgerald pitched well for six innings, throwing 100 pitches.
On Thursday against Dedham, Potts started and left in the fourth inning trailing 3-2. In the fifth inning, with Canton trailing 4-3, Dedham exploded for five runs and then added three more in the sixth. The Bulldogs did add three of their own in the sixth and one more in the seventh.
Rudy had a great at the plate, including a double and a triple, three RBIs, and a stolen base. Blake had a triple and two RBIs, and Potts had two hits, including a double and a RBI. Fitzgerald also hit a double and knocked in a run, and Delsignore had his first RBI of the season. Larson allowed three runs in relief but struck out four batters.
“Our guys could definitely swing the bats,” Medina said after the game, “but our defense did not have a good day and our pitching was not good enough.”
The Bulldogs schedule this week included an away game Tuesday against Foxboro and a home game Thursday against Mansfield at 3:30 p.m. They then play two away games next week — at Dedham on April 17 and at North Attleboro on April 18 — both with noontime starts.
