Lyons, Paul J.

By

Paul J. Lyons, a cherished pillar of his community and a beacon of dedication to family and education, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2024, at his home in Canton. Born on February 16, 1943, in Boston to John and Margaret Lyons, he was a man whose life was marked by commitment, passion, and generosity.

Paul grew up in Dorchester and was a proud alumnus of Boston Latin High School, where he first showcased his academic prowess and leadership skills. His thirst for knowledge and desire to empower others led him to Boston College, where he earned his undergraduate degree, followed by Northeastern University for further studies. These institutions laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong vocation in the field of education.

For many years, Paul served as a respected teacher in the Boston Public Schools, with notable tenures at Boston Tech, now the John D. O’Bryant School of Math and Science. His passion for teaching was matched only by his commitment to his students’ success, both in and out of the classroom. Paul’s influence on the lives he touched was profound, and his legacy as an educator will live on through the countless individuals he inspired.

Paul’s love story with his beloved wife, Cynthia A. Lyons, was one for the ages. Together, they nurtured a family that included their children: Paul J. Lyons Jr. and his wife, Valerie, of Pawleys Island, SC, Angela M. Evans and her husband, Scot, of Kingston, and Leslie Lyons-Noonan of Needham. He was a doting grandfather to his eight grandchildren, who will carry forward the values he instilled in them. Paul was also a supportive brother to Richard J. Lyons, Mary Monkouski and Jane Bernard, and is predeceased by his brothers Robert and John Lyons.

Beyond his professional and family life, Paul was an avid hockey enthusiast. His dedication to the sport was evident in his role as the president of Canton Youth Hockey, where he not only shaped the program but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship among the youth. His love for the ice extended to the hours he spent driving the Zamboni at the Ponkapoag rink and attending his grandchildren’s hockey games.

Paul’s allegiance to Boston College football was unwavering, and he found joy and fellowship playing on the Canton Men’s Softball team. His commitment to education continued beyond the classroom as he pioneered the first parent-teacher organization at Hansen Elementary School, reinforcing his belief in the importance of parental involvement in education.

Throughout his life, Paul’s priorities were crystal clear: education and family. He approached both with an open heart and a steadfast resolve to make a positive impact. His absence will be profoundly felt by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

As we remember Paul J. Lyons, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. A man who gave so much of himself to others, his memory will continue to inspire and guide us. Paul’s legacy is a testament to the incredible difference one person can make in the lives of many.

He leaves behind a family that adores him, a community that respects him, and a world that has been undeniably bettered by his presence. Paul’s journey through life was marked by the laughter, wisdom, and kindness he shared with everyone he met. As we bid him farewell, we do so with gratitude for the time we had with him and the certainty that his spirit will remain with us always.

Relatives and friends invited to attend a funeral Mass Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. in St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton. Burial will be private.
