Track teams fall to OA despite individual successes
By Mike BergerBoth the boys’ and girls’ CHS outdoor track teams continued to make strides on an individual level, but they still have a way to go as a team as they both lost to Oliver Ames last week to fall to 0-2 on the season.
Boys’ head coach Brian Conroy said the Bulldogs had a very good meet, but still fell just short 75-61. Scoring sweeps by OA in the 110 high hurdles, 800 meters, two mile, and triple jump hurt Canton’s chances of winning the meet.
Canton senior Cam Huber again led the team with first-place finishes in the 400 intermediate hurdles (62.5 sec.), 400 meters (51.5), and high jump (5’6”). Huber has already qualified for the state meet in the 400 meters and 400 hurdles.
Three other participants also qualified for states with their performances. Julian Malbranche won the javelin with a personal-best throw of 152 feet, 10 inches. Obi Nwankwo won the 200 with a best time of 22.9 seconds, and newcomer Elias Camacho won the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 8.25 inches, while placing second in the 200 in 23.6 seconds.
Peter Sheehan placed second in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 38 feet, 9.5 inches, missing first place by half a foot. He also won the discus at 101 feet, 2.5 inches.
Canton’s other first-place finish was by Derek Seto in the 100 with a time of 11.4 seconds. Other Canton scorers were Jake Fruci, third, mile, 4:39.4; and Matt Waldman, third, javelin, 121 feet, 10 inches.
The girls’ team was defeated 94-32 as the lady Bulldogs struggled against the Tigers’ overall depth in all of the events.
Canton was led by senior Vicky Tondre, who won three events, including the 100-meter dash (12.9 sec.), 200 meters (26.3), and long jump (16’11.5”). She also placed second in the triple jump at 33 feet, 10 inches. Junior Mellyn Costello won the 110 high hurdles with a time of 16.7 seconds and placed second in the long jump with a throw of 15 feet, 2.5 inches.
Other top finishers for Canton were sophomore Courtney Loughnane, second, two mile, 13:13.5; and sophomore Michaela Kelly, second, 800 meters, 2:36.1.
The next meet for both teams is at home against Attleboro on April 24 beginning at 3:45 p.m.
