Dolan, Robert U.
By Canton CitizenRobert U. “Bob” Dolan passed away peacefully on January 9, 2025, at the Ruth McLain Hospice House in Braintree at the age of 83. Bob was a cherished member of his community and a beacon of kindness and friendship to all who knew him.
Bob’s journey began in West Roxbury, where he was born into a large family of 10. He attended Boston College High School and was a proud graduate of Roslindale High. He served his country with honor in the United States Navy as a torpedo man from 1960-65 at USN submarine base in New London, CT.
Robert married his one true love, Agnes, in 1963 and moved to 33 Patriots Drive in Canton where they raised their family and lived for 60 years. Bob’s dedication to his work was evident in his longstanding career at the Boston Globe, where he was a valued member of the printing department for 43 years. Starting as a paperboy, then typeset operator, to photography and digital advertising. He had such a pride for the Globe newspaper and its community under the Taylor family. He retired in 2001 and went back to work with his son Chris Dolan at Dolan Contracting.
Bob’s heart was always with his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Agnes M. (Cowley), and was a loving father to Christopher R. Dolan and his wife, Terri, of Wareham, Cynthia A. Candlen of South Carolina, and Karen D. Curran and her husband, Joe, of Gloucester. He was the dear brother of Marie Driscoll of Dedham and Barbara Macone of Mansfield, and he holds a place in the hearts of his late siblings, Francis Dolan, Madeline Carson, Paul Dolan, John “Jack” Dolan, Theresa Pursley, Patricia Manning, and William “Joey” Dolan. He is preceded by his parents, Cecilia and Francis Dolan. Bob’s legacy continues through his eight grandchildren and nine (soon to be 10) great-grandchildren, who all learned by his great, unwavering example and will carry on his spirit of love and generosity.
For over 60 years, Bob was a proud resident of Canton. His commitment to service was exemplified by his active involvement in the Canton Lions Club, the Knights of Columbus Council 2095, and his endless volunteer activities and daily attendance at St. John the Evangelist/Oscar Romero in Canton. Bob’s community spirit shone through his actions, and his presence will be greatly missed.
Bob was a man of many interests, staying active by enjoying water skiing, jogging daily into his 60s, and at the age of 80 becoming a proud member of the Bretton Woods over-80 ski club. He found particular joy in skiing with his family and hosting large gatherings at their home. These moments on the slopes and around his pool created cherished memories that his family will hold dear forever. His friendly demeanor and kind heart made him a joy to be around, and his enthusiasm for life was infectious.
Robert “Bob” Dolan will be remembered for his warm smile, his unwavering kindness, and his dedication to his family and community. His life was a testament to the power of goodwill, faith in God, and the enduring strength of family. Though he has left this world, his legacy of love and service remains, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
As we say farewell to Bob, we celebrate the remarkable life he led and the countless lives he touched. His spirit will continue to inspire us, and his memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have shared in his journey. Rest in peace, dear Bob, and know that your life was a gift to us all.
